monograph of a Swiss artist
The book Florin Granwehr (1942 – 2019) is the first systematic monograph of this remarkable Swiss artist who, despite his mainly Zurich-based work, maintained interesting contacts with the Czech environment. This was mainly thanks to his wife and prominent art theorist Ludmila Vachtová.
.
Granwehr’s rationally and geometrically based plastic and drawing work emerged from the heritage of Zurich Concretism and developed from the 1960s until the 2010s. Its most visible part is a series of impressive monumental geometric realisations placed in public spaces in Swiss cities.
But through his systematic approach and self-discipline, he gradually brought it to a very distinctive position, culminating in the definition of his own creative Theorem. A work consisting of tens of thousands of drawings, based on mathematical principles so fundamental to the author.
Through three thematic chapters and a rich pictorial accompaniment, the book presents this artist as a strong representative of the constructive approaches of his generation, but also as a very distinct and unique personality.
The book also tries to bring the artist’s work closer to the Czech audience because a substantial part of the artist’s work, consisting of a large number of objects and drawings, is currently located in the Czech Republic.
The author of the concept and the text part of the book is Viktor Čech, a Prague-based theoretician and curator of contemporary art.
The photographic part of the book is the work of the Czech-Swiss photographer and cameraman Toni Dusek, who had the opportunity to observe and document the work of Florin Granwehr during the long years of their mutual contacts.
The book is published in English.
