Viktor Čech (*1980)
is a curator, critic and theorist of contemporary art based in Prague. He studied art history at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague and completed his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Art and Design at ÚJEP in Ústí nad Labem.
His work focuses on interdisciplinary overlaps, particularly between choreography and visual art, questions of physicality in relation to performative and social forms, and the relationship between Art history and contemporary art.
In addition to a number of curatorial projects and theoretical texts devoted to this theme, he also addresses it from the perspective of a critic of contemporary art and contemporary dance. In his curatorial work, he is also interested in the issue of experimental presentation of contemporary art and the role of the viewer (for example, the long-running project of a community show of contemporary art in video format, Videokemp, since 2005). In his Ph.D., he focused on the relationship between choreographic structures and contemporary art.
He currently focuses his attention on issues related to the different experiences of disabled people in an artistic context (in relation to his own severe hearing impairment) and, in parallel, as part of his long-term interest in choreography in the visual arts, he researches its roots in modernist and avant-garde art.
He is a laureate of the Věra Jirousová Award for established art critics (2019).
He currently works as an independent curator and art critic.
He worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Art Education at the Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague (2014-2021)..
